Look Who’s On Top

...and he hasn’t even declared his candidacy…yet:

If this straw poll is any indication, I certainly hope he does! And looky who’s near the bottom of the list: Senator McCain. Now should that surprise anyone? NO. I’ll definitely report what the final number is.

Celebrity Republican Supporters

After reading an LGF article in which Jon Voight layeth down the smack on a reporter, I wondered if there was a list of celebrities, past and present, who support Republicans. Sure enough, there is.
You’d have to go through them to pick out the current ones, they aren’t too hard to find. The next question is this: how many of these were awakened by 9/11, and how many have always supported the GOP. I’d say that’s a pretty fair question to ask.

400 Years Ago: Jamestown

Filed under: | History | Religion

Now here is a significant landmark for our country: the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, the first true colonial settlement from England:

The settlers’ mission was not an easy one, as they faced opposition from the beginning of their expedition. Unexpected storms, delayed their departure from the English Channel. Shortly, after arriving in Virginia, they suffered an immediate attack from the natives. Consequently, Robert Hunt, a humble clergyman from England, instructed that three days of prayer and fasting be observed in repentance for sins and in preparation for the dedication of the land!
On April 29th, crew members took timbers from their ship to construct a makeshift cross. Dragging it ashore, they planted the cross firmly in the sand. Kneeling in humility, Pastor Robert Hunt prayed to dedicate the new world to God. His prayer that the Gospel would be preached from these shores to the uttermost parts of the earth established a monumental covenant with God that laid the foundation for the birth of a nation founded on Christ!

Happy 70th Birthday Saddam…

Filed under: | War on Terror

...I don’t like saying this on Sundays, so I will put it this way. He ain’t in Heaven. And of course, yesterday his supporters certainly didn’t know (nor did they care about) the difference between that distinction, let alone another critical distinction for those who watch a certain television show.
One other thing for sure. Saddam was, and always will be, the first inductee into the Footy Umpire Hall of Fame!

One of The Macker’s all-time favorite songs, performed by Mason Williams, Craig Einhorn, and the Umpqua Symphony:

This is also a wonderful driving tune, especially when you’re going down winding roads. Try it sometime, you won’t regret it.

Olmert: Kick The Can Down The Road

Filed under: | War on Terror

According to an online interview published by the German magazine Focus, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert “boldly” states the following:

“Iran’s nuclear program can be thrown back by years in a ten day attack using thousands of Tomahawk cruise missiles.”

No, Mr. Prime Minister, it will only piss them off even more. Tomahawks cannot penetrate the deep underground facilities the Iranians have; it can only utilize three types of warhead: conventional 1,000-pound, conventional cluster bomb, or a W80 nuke. They learned well from Saddam’s debacle. That’s why we’ve been working on bunker busters.
The only way we’re going to permanently take out the mullahs’ desires for nuclear supremacy in the Middle East (which, may I remind you, threatens every single state in that region, not just Israel) is to get rid of the mullahs themselves. And we must support the Iranian People to do this, because contrary to what is generally believed, they are NOT Muslim, but live under the mullahs’ tyranny.

Time for a Russian Joke:
Q. Since when did Vladimir Vladimirovitch display a taste in fashion?
A. When he appears on Windows XP desktop wallpapers, that’s when!

See Pooty and other Russian figures appear on XP here. See, I thought Hud’s quick blurb of a Soviet UFO was Photoshoppingly Phunny, but this one’s just as bad!

Macker At The Movies

Seeing as I’ve viewed this documentary film many times for almost ten years (first on VHS and, as of yesterday, DVD, and also in light of my recent visit to the Trinity Site, it’s high time to let you know what I think of Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie, which is directed by Peter Kuran and narrated by William Shatner, and originally released in 1995, the 50th Anniversary year of the Trinity test. It follows the path from the beginnings of the Manhattan Project, all the way to Trinity…and Beyond…with archival footage of numerous nuclear weapons tests by the United States, Soviet Union, and even China.
This is not, I repeat, NOT a movie you want to watch by yourself; try as hard as you can to watch it with someone you care about. The stuff they portray on OMGWAGD movies such as The Day After and Threads doesn’t hold a candle to this movie.
THIS. IS. THE. REAL. THING! The images of the explosions (especially the H-bombs) are simultaneously beautiful and horrifying. If you don’t have the stomach to see frakked-up animals, houses getting blown away, and vegetation set ablaze with blast waves, then DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM! Got that? Good.

This film, at least in my book, also scores highly for not passing judgment, one way or the other, on the morality of these tests. It merely presents what we and the Soviets did during the Cold War. The director leaves that judgement up to you, where it should be, and sadly, that is a lost art today. It is a film meant to provoke deep reflection upon ourselves as individuals, and we as a race: the Human Race: capable of fantastic achievments and also terrible acts of destruction.
The Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce ran this film for a free viewing at the Clyde W. Tombaugh IMAX Theater on the same evening as the Site tour. The small domed screen (which normally functions as a planetarium) didn’t show a true IMAX experience, but you can’t have everything. The vast majority of the audience was silent, except for a small group of women who made a lot of “tsk tsks”...and they were of a different cultural upbringing, if you know what I mean. I almost wanted to say STFU, but thought better of it. I will leave this up to you as to who those women were.
Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie is Not Rated by the MPAA. Stunningly powerful, it’s the stuff which gives one nightmares. I would have liked to have seen footage from the UK and French tests, but you can’t have everything. My rating: 8

BRRRRRRRRRR!

It’s one thing for a guy to have the hots for some girl and she tells him to take a cold shower. It’s quite another when you get up in the morning, shave, use the facilities, and then turn on the shower…
...only to find there’s no hot water. ARRRRRRGH!
So I called it in. I highly doubt that at this time of the morning, other residents of this apartment building will notice. Hopefully it’ll be fixed by then, but as for me, man it sure woke me up fast!

Teachers: No iPods during Tests

Every generation of college students has a method for cheating on tests. Programmable alphanumeric calculators, cell phones with text messaging capabilities…and now, iPods (and Zunes for that matter).
This is quite amusing for a couple of reasons. First, I’m not in college, so I’m on the outside looking in. Second, these devices, with their limited PDA functions (in addition to playing music and/or videos), make them a natural outlet for storing formulae and other critical notes.
Yet, that same capability is what makes them a valuable learning tool. Just not during tests, which is only right.

My Dad would have been 71 years old today. I miss him. I think he would have been proud of what I did yesterday.

Dem Neo-Copperheads

Filed under: | Axis of Donks

So, with the Democrats’ statement that they have enough votes to override President Bush’s promised veto of the measure to mandate withdrawal from Iraq, coupled with earmarks for bulls**t projects which have nothing at all to do with the war…
...in conjunction with the hearings regarding Pat Tillman’s death and the parade of Tillman’s family and Jessica Lynch (who all seemed willing to cooperate)...
...and also in conjunction with Representative Dennis Kucinich’s introduction of articles of impeachment against Vice President Cheney…
...I’d say the Democrats have fulfilled the demand advocated by Mama Moonbat and her circle of friends:

Investigations without end, Amen, and a waste of the Taxpayers’ money. The Democratic Party is displaying for all the world to see the sheer, utter hatred for President Bush, the Republican Party, and the United States of America at a level not seen since the Civil War, when their Copperhead faction actively sought to recognize the Confederacy and end the war. I’m at the point where I’m going to call the Democrats neo-Copperheads.

Right On Target

Today…for the first time EVER, I shot a firearm at a shooting range, to see what it’s like. The weapon I tried out was a Sig Sauer P226, chambered for 9mm. The good folks at Caswells Shooting Range in Mesa were very helpful. Of course I had to rent everything: the weapon, 50 rounds of ammo, and eye/ear protection. All told, just under $40.
The first target, I shot 15 rounds at 10 feet, the rest at 15. The second target, 15 rounds at 15 feet, the rest at 20. The recoil I was expecting wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Of course, I was dealing with 9mm, and when both the sales rep (who swears by Sigs) and the range instructor showed me how to properly hold the weapon when I fired it, I gained confidence that I, indeed, was capable of doing this. So I took the plunge. In the near future, I want to take my local friends with me to show them I can do it…and to test out other calibers: specifically, .40 S&W and .45 ACP, before I make my final decision.
And your final question: was it worth it? You bet it was! And I felt GOOD afterwards.
