The el cubos in this country wet themselves with joy immediately after Президент Оба́ма took office, with his decision to close Guantanamo Bay by the end of this year. But I wonder what they’ll be thinking since he’s having second thoughts:

Officials told the Times the administration’s first public moves on the issue could come as early as next week.
The plan would amend the system created by former president George W. Bush to provide more legal protections for terrorism suspects.
Continuing the military commissions in any form would most likely prompt sharp criticism from human rights groups as well as some of Obama’s political allies, the paper noted.
But officials who work on the Guantanamo issue say administration lawyers have become concerned that they would face significant obstacles to trying some terrorism suspects in federal courts, the Times said.
“The more they look at it,” an official told the Times, “the more commissions don’t look as bad as they did on Jan. 20.”

So many countries around the world, Canada included, welcomed The One™‘s election. Now, the Canadians are feeling the cold shoulder of Президент Оба́ма as he advocates “Buy American” legislation, eh:

The reality is that Canada and the United States are engaging in skirmishes that threaten to erupt into an all-out trade war.
John Hayward runs an industrial equipment company, Hayward Gordon, in Halton Hills, Ont., but is in the process of transferring some of his company’s manufacturing capacity to the United States from Canada, with the loss of Canadian jobs, because he is being shut out of the American market by President Obama’s stimulus bill.
“It boils down to the fact a very large number of Canadian companies, who have been competing in the U. S. for decades, have been told overnight that they can’t sell to the U. S.,” he said.

Perhaps there’s more than just a bit of Buyer’s Remorse coming from Canadians. I don’t blame them. I’d much rather be trading with Canada than just about any other country right about now, eh.
