RIP Majel Barrett Roddenberry

Majel Barrett Roddenberry, a science fiction icon for well over forty years, passed away today at the age of 76. Even after her husband died in 1991, she carried the Star Trek torch for another seventeen years.
Let’s see...she was originally ‘Number One’ in the 1964 pilot, “The Cage,” and the networks didn’t like a strong woman in that role. During the Original Series (1966-1969), she portrayed Nurse Christine Chapel, who was attracted to Spock. She also patterned the original computer voice. During the movie era, her character rose up in the ranks, becoming a Commander and a full Doctor.
During the TNG era, she portrayed Lwaxana Troi, Deanna’s Betazed mother. Her character was an absolute riot! And of course, she patterned the 24th-Century computer voice as well. In the late 1990s, she revived a premise Gene had locked up: Earth: Final Conflict, which ran for five seasons (yes, I admit I stopped watching it after three), as well as Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda.
Yep, Majel contributed mightily to Star Trek in particular, and to science fiction in general; she will be missed.

I swear, lots of the so-called “Top 40” which permeates the airwaves these days is so terrible, I’d rather have Disco:

Now This is Good News

Rosie O’Donnell, prominent member of the Film Actors’ Guild, has had her “variety show” cancelled after just one airing! Not that that’s an unusual thing, it happens quite often in today’s television environment. Only this time, Rosie’s show got caught, and we all know how prominent she is.
Why I’ll bet she’s just as furious as she was when she lost that lawsuit five years ago against McCall’s, which she also ran into the ground. Looks to me like everything she touches, she turns into s**t, and the viewing public said “Frak You, Rosie!”
Too bad so sad. Maybe next time the networks attempt to revive the variety show genre, they’ll do it without a politically or socially controversial figure.
