Boxing Day, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

Here in the US of A, we have yet another massive day of traffic at the malls, stores, etc., with people returning various gifts, items, blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. In Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other Commonwealth countries. It’s Wrestling Boxing Day, which is generally held on the Feast of St. Stephen, and people give gifts to the less fortunate members of society, eh.
Turns out they, too, have yet another massive day of traffic at the malls, stores, etc., with people returning various gifts, items, blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. Sounds familiar, eh.

Stolen Government, Eh?

Filed under: | Great White North

Less than two months after their election which sent the Tories back to Parliament Hill with a stronger minority government, the Liberals, NDP, and the separatist Bloc Québécois parties have made clear their intention to bring down Prime Minister Harper with a Vote of No Confidence next Monday and ally themselves into a ruling coalition which could last up to 18 months. The Governor General of Canada is cutting short an overseas trip and rushing back to Ottawa to figure out what is going on, eh.
There are three choices available: the Governor General can OK the result and allow the coalition to form a government; she can dissolve Parliament and call elections immediately; or, she can allow the Prime Minister to suspend Parliament without dissolving it. Mesdames et messieurs, this is what you get in parliamentary systems of government. Is it any wonder why there have, for example, been more governments in Italy than the number of years since the formation of its post-WWII republic, eh.
And I’ll bet the Canadian Voters will be pissed off at having to go back to the polls again, eh.

A Strange Serial, Eh

Filed under: | Entertainment | Great White North

One of my friends e-mailed me this movie poster graphic last night; when I opened it, my jaw dropped. I thought “He’s gotta be kidding me, eh.”
Turns out he wasn’t. There really was a Republic Serial titled Canadian Mounties vs. Atomic Invaders. One would think with this title it’d be science fiction (and schlock sci-fi at that!), but it actually had a Cold War setting, so it’s easy to figure out who the Bad Guys are. Now I’m gonna look for this on the web, eh.

Canada Votes, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

Well my friends, tonight was Canada’s Election for the House of Commons in Ottawa. Let’s see how things turned out, but keep in mind, you never know how these numbers will change, eh:
Conservatives: 141 Elected, 2 Leading. Total: 143
Liberals: 74 Elected, 3 Leading. Total: 77
Bloc Québécois: 48 Elected, 1 Leading. Total: 49
New Democratic Party: 35 Elected, 2 Leading. Total: 37
Independent: 2 Elected, 0 Leading. Total: 2
That means Stephen Harper will remain as Prime Minister, this time with a stronger minority government at the expense of the Liberals. And it looks as though the Greens got shut out. I will make an educated guess that if this government works out, next time an election rolls around, the Tories get a majority. May this be a good sign of things to come in the United States, eh.

Early Election in Canada, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

The race is also on in Canada! Prime Minister Stephen Harper dissolves Parliament and calls for an Early Election on Tuesday, October 14, eh.
As of today’s dissolution of Parliament, the Conservatives leave with 127 seats, followed by the Liberals with 95, the Bloc Québécois with 48, the NDP with 30, 4 Independents and 4 vacant seats. The opposition are already painting the Tories with the GOP stroke of George W. Bush, which means they’re making the same mistake there as the Demo☭rats are here, eh.
And just like two and a half years ago, I’ll be able to come home and not worry about early projections; I’ll get the news at the same time as the rest of the world...and that is a good thing, no matter the result, eh.

Good Luck Grits, Eh

Filed under: | BS Patrol | Great White North

They’re going to need it trying to sell a Green Shift plan to voters in the province of Alberta...rich Oil Country in Canada...and at the Calgary Stampede. I’ve been aware for many years that the western provinces tend to oppose many Federal schemes originating from Ottawa, so there is no surprise that the Liberals’ latest plan calls for carbon emissions taxes. How much do you want to bet it has Algore’s blessing, eh.
Read some of the comments left at the CBC page; those who hail from the West call the bulls**t quickly. To wit, eh:

That title tells all—just take the F out of the last word.
“Dion mixes Stampede with politics to sell Green Shift”
Somebody at CBC is having a bit of fun.

Why I Miss Hockey Night, eh

Filed under: | Great White North | Sports

This picture explains it all, eh:

Don’t look at the guy on the left. That’s Ron MacLean. I’m talkin’ about the flamboyantly-dressed curmudgeon on the right: Don Cherry, who’s to Canada what Howard Cosell was to the USA, eh.

With Loyalty Like This….

Filed under: | BS Patrol | Great White North

Here’s an interesting passage I found on another board, and the person uttering this phrase has become, shall we say, disillusioned with the United States:

I have been very close to breaking up with the United States. I have been having an affaire du coeur with Canada for years now. shhh, don’t tell America. I’m hoping America will get back into shape (I mean God, not to be shallow, but he’s grown quite the beer belly on a Republican diet), and maybe even start listening to me again. America and I haven’t been communicating well, you see. Canada is beautiful, and he understands me. But I’m willing to give America another chance, because I’m loyal like that.

And what a great choice of words there (which I’ve taken the liberty to emphasize), because America under a Democrat Diet will become emaciated. Hope you like being a Grit, eh.

Toxic Tote Bags, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

Gee, I wonder who is responsible for this debacle, eh:

Indigo and Chapters are recalling about 10,000 tote bags because they may cause skin irritation.
The bags, which were part of a Mother’s Day gift-with-purchase promotion, were distributed across the country.
“A few skin irritations have been reported in relation to the handling of this blue floral printed tote bag with a green lining that customers received as a gift with purchase,” the company said.
The company said it pulled the bags from stores on May 2. Preliminary composition tests showed the presence of a potential skin irritant, the company said.
The recall affects blue tote bags with green linings sold from April 30 through May 2. Consumers should return the bags in exchange for a gift card.

Doesn’t take a Rocket Scientist to figure this one out. Happy Mother’s Day, eh.

Don’t Tase Me, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

I’ll let this Conservative Centrist from Canada speak for itself regarding this revelation, for which comments are closed. Gee I wonder why, eh:

It’s not the amount, it’s the principle. It’s an honour system. Those who cheat are without honour. They need an attitude adjustment. Folks who’ve received a good attitude adjustment are a lot better at following society’s rules. It’s only the ones who’ve never been the recipients of said adjustment that continue to carry on. Lot’s posting on this forum would benefit from a tickle from a taser.

So Pay Your Fare when you go to Vancouver, and you won’t get Tasered, eh.

This Is A Real Series, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

No I’m not kidding. This is a real TV show on CBC, eh:

I just tried to watch some of the videos listed on their site, and it seems they’ve got an IP address block in place. “This content is currently unavailable.” So, if any of you Canadian readers can leave your comments as to the popularity of this show, or anything else of interest about it, please do so, eh.

‘Canadians’ as Racial Slur, Eh?

Filed under: | Great White North | News

Now here’s something which doesn’t surprise me at all...there is a member of my family who has used this word in the past, in the same manner as described in this story. To be fair, the story goes on to say that it is possible for Canadians to sit on a US jury...if they have dual citizenship, eh.

Extra Day Off, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

No, not for me...this is for our Friends in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other Commonwealth countries. It’s known as Wrestling Boxing Day, and it goes out to employees, eh.
So this post is for them. Enjoy it while you can, eh.

Those are THEIR Falls, Eh

Filed under: | Great White North

Uh oh. Looks like we made a boo-boo when filming a tourism video for the good old US of A...by including Horseshoe Falls as Niagara Falls. Bad move, eh.
Let’s straighten this out. Here’s Niagara Falls. This is what should have been filmed, eh:

And here’s Horseshoe Falls:

There is a difference, eh.
