Bobby Fischer Dies

One half of the most famous chess match in history is dead. As much as Bobby Fischer contributed to the game, he also contributed great anti-American, anti-Semitic tirades which, in my opinion, overshadowed his former career. Here’s just one of his quotes:

“The United States is evil. There’s this axis of evil. What about the allies of evil - the United States, England, Japan, Australia? These are the evildoers.”

Fischer chose the wrong side when he renounced the country of his birth.

COMMENTS

Definitely an oddball. He once was romantically linked with a 15-yr-old in Hungary. This was around the ‘92 rematch with Spassky. Which would have made him what? 48? Forget her name. I’d have to dig out my old chess magazines.

But I still enjoy playing over his games. For that ‘92 rematch he’d cooked up some really weird stuff. Especially in his favorite Ruy Lopez Exchange. Sad that he was such a lousy World Champ. And pretty much a lousy human being. I’ve got an mp3 somewhere on one of my hard drives where he called into a radio show in the Phillipines and celebrated the 9/11 attacks.

Spassky called him a close friend. I thought Fischer was a paranoid loner who didn’t have friends. Admirers maybe, but friends? But then Spassky has always been a gentleman.

I wonder what that Hungarian chick thinks now...you can bet the tabloids will track her down somehow.
