Before a 1938 friendly match with Nazi Germany, England’s soccer team was ”persuaded” to give the Nazi salute to the crowd...and der Fuhrer wasn’t even there to see it!
Now, fast forward 70 years, and the DFCs of China are ”persuading” athletes from around the world not to say anything political while they are in Beijing for the Summer Olympics. Two countries have already kowtowed to the Chinese demands: Belgium and New Zealand. The UK may knuckle under soon, and the Queen’s own granddaughter, Zara Phillips, would have to sign the contract in order to compete. Unless their government moves to stop it, which I highly doubt.
The DFCs of China has done massive PR and massive head-cracking to stop criticism of its human rights violations of its own citizens: Tibet, Tiananmen Square, the Falun Gong, the Christians...shall I go on? EVERYONE who goes to China has been watched and will always be watched for one wrong move, and if they’re lucky enough they’ll only be deported.
And of course, the Chinese government hasn’t done this all by themselves. I’ll give credit where it’s due, and that’s the unaccountable bigwigs of the International Olympic Committee for enabling China’s efforts. Nice move, IOC.
