If there is any hope at all in reforming Islam, then one of those voices of hope belongs to Dr. Wafa Sultan, an American originally from Syria, who emigrated to the United States in the late 1980s. She is definitely not afraid of taking on the Muslim establishment:
“Brother, you can believe in stones, as long as you don’t throw them at me. You are free to worship whoever you want, but other people’s beliefs are not your concern, whether they believe that the Messiah is God, son of Mary, or that Satan is God, son of Mary. Let people have their beliefs.”
For this, in their eyes, she is an apostate. And apostates in Islam are, shall we say, not looked upon too kindly. But for Islam to survive the 21st Century, millions more like Dr. Sultan must raise their voices...or they will be extinguished.
