When I lived in southeast Michigan, every so often I’d drive across the border to do some shopping because of the great exchange rate which existed back then; even after the GST and Ontario Provincial Taxes were applied to the items I’d purchase, I still came out ahead, eh.
Not anymore. Yesterday, the Canadian Dollar closed at par with the US Dollar for the first time in almost thirty years. News like this really resonates in the worst way possible in, say, Detroit, with Windsor, ON across the river. As economies go through boom and bust cycles, this is bound to happen, and Canada’s economy, from this American’s perspective at least, is going through a boom. Of course, you Canadian readers can fill me in here on the real news, eh.
And this won’t stop me from traveling to Canada again some day; one of these days I’ll have to get a passport, eh.
