Macker At The Movies

Back in 1979, nukes did this in space. They’re not supposed to in the real world. But back then, Hollywood didn’t care; they treated the audience as a bunch of dumb cattle who wanted to see disaster movies. And lemme tell ya...Meteor was one such disaster.
Not even the likes of Sean Connery, Karl Malden, Brian Keith (who did a great job speaking all of his lines in Russian), and Natalie Wood could rescue it from said disaster; Martin Landau’s performance as a total a**hole only added to it. What made it worse was the score which seemed to borrow from ST:TMP whenever V’Ger showed up....yet, this movie showed up in theaters a couple of months ahead of the real classic of 1979. Don’t forget, some Trek fans call TMP a disaster film too, but that’s another story.
So who got killed? Some poor Siberian family a’la Tunguska...Hong Kong got drowned...some Swiss ski resort town got buried in a massive avalanche...and then there’s New York City. Guess which building got hit first? Well let’s just say it’s hard to joke about it now.
Oh, I almost forgot...I have to admit it was fun watching the Soviet and American orbital weapons platforms actually doing the work they were supposed to do in the first place...according to the premise that is.
Meteor is rated PG for language. Yet another movie for Mike Nelson to slam with Rifftrax. My rating: 3
