Dear Coach Ditka:
I heard recently that you were considering a run for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, a state I formerly lived in. I know that the GOP is going through some tough times there right now, and what the Land of Lincoln needs is a tough man to pull them through it and to support President Bush to boot.
I can certainly understand your reluctance to run in light of the current situation there, but I hope you would consider the moves of another man half a century ago who also expressed similar reservations about public service. But I feel your heart is in the right place. You have opinions and you are not afraid to express them.
Nineteen years ago you commented after a Bears victory about fan complaints to Channel 2 about the network’s pre-emption with the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Reykjavik; I don’t remember the exact words you said, but the implication coming from you that “there are things in life that are more important than football” raised the eyebrows of many people who were not just Fans of Da Team dat is known as...DA BEARS!
Consider this, Coach Ditka: there are thousands of ordinary Illinois citizens who want a champion to lead them...and to help guide our country as a whole. There is no doubt that the Illinois State Republican Party supports you already, but I hope you can listen to the voices and hearts of those you would represent, as did Dwight D. Eisenhower, who listened, ran, and served when his country...the people...called for him.
If anyone could BE LIKE IKE...you have that chance. Listen to the people and seize it now!
