Ah, here’s something that I’ve been following for a short bit.
The ACLU went apes**t back in 1989 when some atheist didn’t like the cross sitting on top of Mount Soledad as part of a War Memorial…something that’s been there since 1954! So they filed suit and over the years, the ACLU and the City of San Diego went back and forth on this issue.
Until last Tuesday when San Diegans approved Proposition A by a 3-to-1 margin, which would transfer ownership of the Memorial to the Federal Government.
Of course this isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot. The ACLU wants to invalidate Proposition A’s results and demand the original builders of the memorial, the Mount Soledad Memorial Association, to take the cross down. The Association wants to make sure it gets its money back from the City when the transfer is completed. This is all contingent on whether the Feds accept the Memorial and turn it into a National Monument. As it is, I’ve already got a headache just writing about this….
