It would have been interesting to see Pooty’s handpicked successor run against, say, former chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov in next year’s Presidential Election in Russia. However, this will likely not happen due to a recent Supreme Court (would we call it SCORUS?) ruling there, upholding a recently-passed electoral law which, in effect, puts a stranglehold on the Russian opposition parties.
Basically, in order to be considered a legitimate political party there, it has to have at least 50,000 members and be represented in one-half of Russia’s oblasts. So if they want to compete they better get crackin’. Pooty may have stacked the deck against them, but it isn’t an impossible hurdle.
